International recognition for Department of Economics
Kudos are in order for the Department of Economics which has received national and international recognition this summer with three highly prestigious awards.
In June, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released its Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019 and UCalgary’s Department of Economics ranked second in Canada in terms of research impact.
This was followed up by an honour from the Canadian Women Economists Committee who awarded Dr. Lucija Muehlenbachs, PhD a CWEC Young Researcher Prize for her groundbreaking research in the areas of environmental and resource economics, with expertise in the oil and gas sector.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kunio Tsuyuhara, PhD was awarded the Harry G. Johnson Prize for the best paper in the Canadian Journal of Economics. Dr. Tsuyuhara’s paper was titled On the Job Search, Wage Dispersion and Trade Liberalization.
Department of Economics head Dr. Rob Oxoby, PhD, says that his department feels fortunate and grateful for the honours. “They show how we’re excelling,” he says. “I think part of what’s going on is, in recent years, we’ve had a lot of our people publishing in the top journals, doing great, leading research, and we’re now seeing the ranking returns on that. It’s all coming to fruition now and we really are becoming one of the top economics departments in the country.”
“These awards are icing on the cake.”
