It all started with a red, yellow, black and white scarf.

The annual tradition continued for first-year students at the Schulich School of Engineering as they picked up their keepsakes before taking part in Orientation Day activities.

This year’s events began at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium, where they heard from several speakers including Interim Dean Anders Nygren, who hopes students seize all of the opportunities available to them during their time at the University of Calgary.

He says they are able to learn from world-class teachers and researchers, involve themselves with hands-on experiences or connect with industry professionals.

The students then took part in a number of activities including a tour of the Schulich Makerspaces, visits with clubs and teams, and an ice cream treat to end the day.

Earlier in the week, Schulich also welcomed students to the Indigenous Pathways program (Aug. 26-27) as well as to the Graduate Student Orientation (Aug. 28).
