University of Calgary campus leaders appointed to the Order of Canada

On June 30, Governor General David Johnston announced 113 new appointments to the Order of Canada, including three leaders from the University of Calgary community.

Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is a pinnacle in Canadian society that acknowledges the work and dedication of citizens for the betterment of their country. Over the last 49 years, more than 6,500 people have been appointed to the order since its establishment during Canada’s centennial year.

The Honourable Warren Winkler, O.C., former Chief Justice of Ontario, was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Calgary in May 2013. Winkler has been appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the advancement of Canadian labour law and for making the justice system more effective and accessible as former chief justice of the Ontario Court of Appeal. Winkler grew up in Pincher Creek, Alta.  

Linda Marie Fedigan, C.M., University of Calgary professor emerita of anthropology and Canada Research Chair in Primatology and Bioanthropology, was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada for her contributions to advancing our understanding of the behaviour and society of several primate species and for her dedication as a mentor to the next generation of primatologists. Fedigan is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and was awarded with the Distinguished Primatologist Award from the American Society of Primatologists in 2013.

Stephen Gaetz, C.M., University of Calgary BA’83, is a professor of education at York University, director of The Canadian Observatory on Homelessness and the Homeless Hub. Gaetz is also president of Raising the Roof, a Canadian charity that focuses on long-term solutions to homelessness. He was honoured for his leadership in providing evidence-based research to policy-makers and practitioners in the movement to prevent and reduce homelessness in Canada.

The Order of Canada motto, They Desire a Better Country, highlights the impact of the work that recipients have achieved to advance the country for future generations.

All Canadians are eligible for the Order of Canada, with the exception of federal and provincial politicians and judges while in office. Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
