Fiona Clement appointed department head, Community Health Sciences
The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Fiona Clement, PhD ‘06, as the department head for Community Health Sciences, effective Aug. 1, 2020.
Dr. Clement replaces Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn, MD, PhD, who has officially started her new role as dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Thank you to Dr. Scott Patten, MD, PhD, for stepping in as interim department head.
Fiona has extensive training in health sciences research, health economics and health policy. She joined our medical school in 2011 as an assistant professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences. In 2012, she became the director of our Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Unit within the O’Brien Institute for Public Health.
In 2015, Fiona was selected as the Canadian Harkness fellow in health care policy and practice and spent a year at the University of California — San Francisco studying the United States’ health-care policy environment. She was named a Top 40 Under 40 by Avenue Magazine that same year, and as one of UCalgary’s peak scholars in 2017. She is deeply engaged with the university community, and beyond, with roles on search and selection committees, the Tenure and Promotions Committee and as co-chair of the CSM’s Awards and Recognition Committee.
Fiona’s focus on educational excellence and faculty support will be key in her new role. She will continue to shape and enhance the department, which will translate to better health care for our community.
Please join me in congratulating Fiona on her new role within the Cumming School of Medicine.
Sincerely,
Jon Meddings, MD
