Congratulations to Lora Oehlberg and Wesley Willett, co-editors of new book on data and the stories it can tell

The book was recenlty published by Routledge and is titled "Making Data: Physical Design and Craft in a Data-Driven World"
Book cover

Humans have created physical representations of quantitative data since at least 12,000 BCE. While we now also collect and represent data using digital media, people still create physical representations of data for a variety of reasons: as a means of artistic expression, as a way to analyze data, as a pedagogical exercise, or to provoke enlightenment, engagement, and delight. Each physical instantiation of data is created using techniques that are tailored to the needs, knowledge, or specialties of its creators and audience.

Department of Computer Science faculty members Dr. Lora Oehlberg and Dr. Wesley Willett are co-editors of a new 2023 book which provides a snapshot of the diverse practices contemporary creators are using to produce objects, spaces, and experiences imbued with data.  Across 25+ beautifully-illustrated chapters, international artists, designers, and scientists each explain the process of creating a specific data-driven piece.
