Promoting Your Work

Tell your story by working with the Libin Communications Team

Promoting your work

The communications team is here to tell the stories of the Institute. By doing so, we are promoting a healthy lifestyle, increasing public awareness of the Institute and the important work underway. We have numerous ways to tell your stories, including on social media, on our website and in our monthly newsletter. We also partner with the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Service’s communications departments to reach different audiences.

But we can’t do it alone. Please let our team know if you, a colleague, or trainee has won an award, been published, made a discovery, are working on a new program or initiative or have another interesting story to share.

Canadian Press Style

The University of Calgary brand guidelines stipulate that content be written in Canadian Press Style, which uses active voice and is written for a lay audience.

Unique Aspects of this style include:

  • Last names only after first reference, so “Dr.” and first name are dropped after first reference.
  • Percent is spelled using two words: per cent
  • Medical and scientific jargon is discouraged
  • Writing is simple, using a journalistic style and storytelling techniques
  • Uses imagery  (please be prepared to supply or be available for an image or video)
  • Doesn't use Oxford comma

Providing feedback

A communicator’s role is to ensure all content is accurate and accessible to a lay audience, including patients, donors and the general public by avoiding complex medical and scientific terms.

However, you will have the opportunity to provide suggested feedback before publication.
