Membership Expectations
Individuals interested in membership at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute are expected to:
- Enhance the quality of cardiovascular health and clinical care, cardiovascular research and cardiovascular education
- Participate in activities and meetings of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute
- Contribute to a positive community culture at the Institute
- Support and enhance the synergy of the Institute’s activities with related local, national and international programs
- Advance the vision, mission and principles of the Institute
Expectations and Benefits of Membership
Who is eligible?
- Undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral level trainees under the supervision of Libin Institute members
- Residents and fellows in the Department of Cardiac Sciences at the University of Calgary
Expectations
Trainee members are expected to participate in a minimum number of RUSS and/or CV journal club and/or grand rounds sessions; present at research day; attend external speaker series talks; and use appropriate Libin branding.
Benefits
Trainee members have access to studentships and scholarships, drop down space, mentorship, travel awards and publication awards.
Who is eligible?
Any individual who conducts or participants in an investigative undertaking in the field of cardiovascular health
Expectations
- Attend Libin events such as RUSS, Journal Club, External Speaker Series and Research Day
- Support Libin activities by taking part in such things as peer review, scholarship review, poster judging and committee work
- Participate in relevant program activities
- Give community talks about their research
- Notify Libin operations staff of grants and publications
- Use Libin brand standards
Benefits
Access to internal funding (bridge, seed/catalyst, matched), equipment and maintenance support, mentorship and space
Who is eligible?
All clinicians working in cardiovascular care. This includes nurses, physicians, surgeons and technicians

Who is eligible?
Community members, global partners, professionals outside of the University of Calgary

Provide information about opportunities that might appeal to Libin members, or areas for research partnerships

Receive regular updates about cardiovascular research taking place within the Institute, get first access to Libin events
Member Engagement
In an effort to better understand member engagement in the Institute, we track engagement metrics.
For example, we track participation in internal activities such as journal clubs, External Speaker Series sessions and support such as poster judging and community talks. This information may be used as a deciding factor when determining which members receive support.
A short annual engagement survey will be administered to find out how the Institute can cultivate a strong sense of community and better address the needs of our membership.

Trainee Member | 1. Contact the Libin Team to become a member 2. Requests for membership are reviewed by the Libin leadership team (meetings are once per month) 3. Approved applicants are required to meet with the Libin Operations Director and will receive information about expectations and benefits of membership |
Trainee members are appointed for the duration of their studies and are not required to apply year over year | Only members of the Institute are eligible to receive funding – if your supervisor is a member but you have not completed the membership process you are not eligible |
Research Member | 1. Contact the Libin Team to become a member 2. Requests for membership are reviewed by the Libin leadership team (meetings are once per month) 3. Approved applicants are required to meet with the Libin Operations Director and will receive information about expectations and benefits of membership |
Research member engagement will be reviewed annually. Those individuals not actively involved in the Institute will be migrated to community membership | Individuals can be members of multiple Institutes. As long as they are an active part of Libin they will be eligible for all benefits of this level. |
Clinical Member | All members of the Department of Cardiac Sciences are members of the Libin Institute | Clinical members are appointed for the duration of their employment with the Department of Cardiac Sciences | |
Community Member | Contact the Libin Team to become a member | Community member engagement will be reviewed every five years. Active members will continue on and inactive members will receive communication asking whether or not they are still interested in being a member of the Institute |
