Libin Cardiovascular Institute (LCI) graduate scholarships are now run through the Graduate Award Competition (GAC). The online application will open November 1 through your Student Centre under the My Financials tab.

There is a common application for postdoctoral level scholarships. Please fill out just one application for all postdoctoral scholarships you are applying for.

Important Information for LCI Trainees

  • A GAC-Harmonized Scholarship Workshop was held on November 9. Click the following link for the GAC-Harmonized Scholarship Workshop Slides
     
  • Libin trainees are expected to present at a minimum of one Research Update Seminar Series (RUSS) and Cardiovascular Journal Club session and attend at minimum of 75 per cent of RUSS, Cardiovascular Journal Club and/or External Speaker Series seminars. Attendance at Libin seminars is a condition of funding.

 

 

Awards for All Trainees

Who can apply? The Libin Cardiovascular Institute (LCI) Travel Award is intended to help offset costs for Libin trainees traveling to national and international conferences in the current fiscal year. The LCI Travel Award provides travel support to a maximum of $1,000 per Libin trainee.

Trainees must be presenting a paper or poster or giving an oral presentation. Applicants must provide a copy of his/her accepted abstract and confirmation of acceptance for presentation, as well as a completed Libin Cardiovascular Institute Application for Travel Award form as part of the application process.

Who can apply? Libin trainees with first-authored papers published in peer-reviewed journals.

Designed to recognize and reward trainees at all levels for quality cardiovascular research.

Postdoctoral Funding Opportunities

Deadline for all scholarships except Excellence in Research Awards: May 15, 2023 at 6 p.m.

Who can apply? Full-time primary CSM faculty members at all levels of career development to fund one postdoctoral student at a time.

The LCI will hold an internal competition, only bringing forward the most competitive applications to the CSM.

This scholarship is eligible for participation in the BRAIN CREATE Training Program.

Students receiving Libin BRAIN CREATE Postdoctoral Scholarship funding must agree to the BRAIN CREATE Program Terms of Reference.

 

Who can apply? Candidates who hold (or are completing) a PhD and who are supervised by a full or associate member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine. Applicants must be pursuing research with a focus on women's cardiovascular health.

 

If you are applying for a Cumming School of Medicine Postdoctoral Scholarship and your research involves the development of neurotechnologies and has the potential for commercialization or patient use in the short or long term, you are eligible for the BRAIN CREATE program. Please check off both the appropriate scholarship and BRAIN CREATE Program in your application, and complete the BRAIN CREATE justification section of the LCI Postdoctoral Scholarship Form.

Postdoctoral scholars (or fellows) receiving Libin BRAIN CREATE Postdoctoral Scholarship funding must agree to the BRAIN CREATE Program Terms of Reference.

Graduate Student Training Opportunities

LCI graduate scholarships are managed by the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS). When applying for a LCI graduate scholarship, please consider the UCalgary award regulations as set out by FGS. If you are a graduate student and currently hold other funding or any other award, please consult with the Faculty of Graduate Studies before applying for a Libin Cardiovascular Institute scholarship. You may be ineligible to receive funding from the Libin Cardiovascular Institute.

Who can apply? Libin trainees registered in a full-time MSc program 

This award's purpose is to recruit students who will be highly competitive for external awards on the basis of their academic performance and research program. Students holding this award are expected to apply for external awards or grants for which they are eligible, including those from provincial or national agencies.

 

Who can apply? Full-time students within the first two years of a thesis-based master’s program in the Cumming School of Medicine who are under the supervision of a full member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute whose research focuses on women's cardiovascular health.

 

Who can apply?  Full-time students within the first two years of a thesis-based master’s program in the Cumming School of Medicine who are under the supervision of a full member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and the person to population (P2) research collaborative group whose research focuses on Cardiovascular Health Promotion.

 

Full-time students in a thesis-based master’s program in the Cumming School of Medicine who are under the supervision of a full member of the LCI may apply for this award.

Who can apply? PhD students in first two years of program

The education council of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute has allocated funds to support two scholarships ($12,500 each) for a period of one year. These awards are designed to enhance competitiveness for longer-term external funding.

Who can apply? Libin trainees registered in a full-time PhD program 

The award is intended to recruit students who will be highly competitive for external awards on the basis of their academic performance and research program. Students holding this award are expected to apply for external awards or grants for which they are eligible, including those from provincial or national agencies.

Who can apply? Full-time students within the first two years of a doctoral program in the Cumming School of Medicine who are under the supervision of a full member of the LCI whose research focuses on women's cardiovascular health.

Clinical Trainee Opportunities

Fellowships and funding opportunities available to clinical trainees within the Libin Cardiovascular Institute. Clinical fellowships are handled through the Department of Cardiac Sciences.

Who can apply? Cardiology, cardiology sub-specialty fellows and cardiac surgery residents

The L.B. Mitchell Clinical Research Prize recognizes the significant contributions of Dr. L.B. Mitchell to cardiovascular health in Calgary. In addition to his research career in clinical cardiac electrophysiology, Dr. Mitchell served as a leader and mentor to colleagues and students and a dedicated provider of care to his patients. The purpose of this annual prize is to support trainees in cardiovascular programs at the University of Calgary.

Who can apply? Clinical Fellows

Dr. Peter F. Russell was the first graduate of the Clinical Cardiology Training Program at the University of Calgary in 1983. This award was established by his colleagues and family to honour his life and the exceptional care and compassion he provided for his patients. It is awarded annually to a clinical fellow who is considered to best exemplify Dr. Russell's passion for medicine and patients.

Who can apply? Clinical fellows

The Arthur J.E. Child Fellowship is supported by a generous gift from the Arthur J.E. Child Foundation. It is awarded to outstanding physicians who wish to pursue advanced training in cardiovascular medicine. The awards support local candidates who plan to undertake Fellowships at high-level international centers and to train locally at the University of Calgary.

Application form

Who can apply? Residents in their final year of training (up to and including R5) may apply. Applicants must successfully complete their current training program prior to commencement of advanced fellowship training.

The Helios – UCMG Awards provides bridging salary support for clinical fellowship trainees who successfully complete postgraduate medical training and are enrolled in further advanced clinical or scholarly training at another institution to enhance their skills.

This award is managed by the Senior Associate Dean, Education, Cumming School of Medicine office. Information about this award is distributed through department heads in late November/early December with results coming out at the end of January/beginning of February.

Who can apply? Teams of cardiologists and cardiology fellows

This annual competition funds collaborative research projects jointly led by at least one staff cardiologist and at least one core cardiology fellow in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Calgary.
