Libin Cardiovascular Institute (LCI) graduate scholarships are now run through the Graduate Award Competition (GAC). The online application will open November 1 through your Student Centre under the My Financials tab.
There is a common application for postdoctoral level scholarships. Please fill out just one application for all postdoctoral scholarships you are applying for.

Trainees applying for LCI graduate scholarships must complete the CSM Harmonized Award Attachment and upload it directly to the online GAC application. To upload your supporting document to the submitted application, please click the “Apply for Awards” tab within your Student Centre to access the link on your Student Awards Application page.
Important Information for LCI Trainees
- Libin trainees are expected to present at a minimum of one Research Update Seminar Series (RUSS) and Cardiovascular Journal Club session and attend at minimum of 75 per cent of RUSS, Cardiovascular Journal Club and/or External Speaker Series seminars. Attendance at Libin seminars is a condition of funding.
Awards for All Trainees
Who can apply? The Libin Cardiovascular Institute (LCI) Travel Award is intended to help offset costs for Libin trainees traveling to national and international conferences in the current fiscal year. The LCI Travel Award provides travel support to a maximum of $1,000 per Libin trainee.
Trainees must be presenting a paper or poster or giving an oral presentation. Applicants must provide a copy of his/her accepted abstract and confirmation of acceptance for presentation, as well as a completed Libin Cardiovascular Institute Application for Travel Award form as part of the application process.
Eligible trainees must not received a LCI Travel Award and/or LCI Women’s Cardiovascular Health Travel Award in the current fiscal year (April 1 to March 31), tracked by conference date. There is a maximum of one award per person per year regardless of you receive a LCI Travel Award and/or a LCI Women’s Cardiovascular Health Travel Award.

Who can apply? Libin trainees with first-authored papers published in peer-reviewed journals.
Designed to recognize and reward trainees at all levels for quality cardiovascular research.

Who can apply? Full-time primary CSM faculty members at all levels of career development to fund one postdoctoral student at a time.
The LCI will hold an internal competition, only bringing forward the most competitive applications to the CSM.
Deadline: Nov. 15, 2024 at 5 p.m.
Who can apply? Candidates who hold (or are completing) a PhD and who are supervised by a full or associate member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine. Applicants must be pursuing research with a focus on women's cardiovascular health.
Please note: This award is not being offered in the Fall of 2024.
Who can apply? Libin trainees registered in a full-time MSc program
This award's purpose is to recruit students who will be highly competitive for external awards on the basis of their academic performance and research program. Students holding this award are expected to apply for external awards or grants for which they are eligible, including those from provincial or national agencies.

Who can apply? Cardiology, cardiology sub-specialty fellows and cardiac surgery residents
The L.B. Mitchell Clinical Research Prize recognizes the significant contributions of Dr. L.B. Mitchell to cardiovascular health in Calgary. In addition to his research career in clinical cardiac electrophysiology, Dr. Mitchell served as a leader and mentor to colleagues and students and a dedicated provider of care to his patients. The purpose of this annual prize is to support trainees in cardiovascular programs at the University of Calgary.

Who can apply? Clinical Fellows
Dr. Peter F. Russell was the first graduate of the Clinical Cardiology Training Program at the University of Calgary in 1983. This award was established by his colleagues and family to honour his life and the exceptional care and compassion he provided for his patients. It is awarded annually to a clinical fellow who is considered to best exemplify Dr. Russell's passion for medicine and patients.

Who can apply? Clinical fellows
The Arthur J.E. Child Fellowship is supported by a generous gift from the Arthur J.E. Child Foundation. It is awarded to outstanding physicians who wish to pursue advanced training in cardiovascular medicine. The awards support local candidates who plan to undertake Fellowships at high-level international centers and to train locally at the University of Calgary.
Who can apply? Residents in their final year of training (up to and including R5) may apply. Applicants must successfully complete their current training program prior to commencement of advanced fellowship training.
The Helios – UCMG Awards provides bridging salary support for clinical fellowship trainees who successfully complete postgraduate medical training and are enrolled in further advanced clinical or scholarly training at another institution to enhance their skills.
This award is managed by the Senior Associate Dean, Education, Cumming School of Medicine office. Information about this award is distributed through department heads in late November/early December with results coming out at the end of January/beginning of February.

Who can apply? Teams of cardiologists and cardiology fellows
This annual competition funds collaborative research projects jointly led by at least one staff cardiologist and at least one core cardiology fellow in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Calgary.
This opportunity is on hold until further notice.
The Libin Cardiovascular Institute and Donald and Loreen Dunklee Summer Studentship in Heart Research was created through a generous donation from M.L. Dunklee with the intention of helping advance research in the area of cardiovascular health. The studentship fund will remain open to contributions from other sources.
Student must:
- Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate at the time of application
- Be working in the area of cardiovascular research with an eligible supervisor (full member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute)
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.2
- Present at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute Summer Student Research Day
BME Calgary partnered with the LCI to offer summer studentships for undergraduate students working on biomedical engineering-related projects to foster collaborations.
Studentships are open to all undergraduates. Existing relationships are eligible, but preference will also be given to new initiatives and collaborations between researchers (co-supervisors).
Studentship value: $7500
Criteria
- Applicants must be supervised, or co-supervised, by a full member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute
- Applicants' research project must be related to cardiovascular research
- Students are required to participate in the Libin Cardiovascular Institute Summer Student Research Day in August or provide a valid reason if unable to participate
- Students are required to participate in the BME Summer Student Symposium in August
- Students are expected to participate in the BME Undergraduate Research program activities over the May-August time frame such as weekly tutorial series
