OVERVIEW

Libin Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) Award is a joint prize from the AHFMR and friends of the Libin family. The purpose of this prize is to recognize cardiovascular health research in honor of Alvin Libin, OC, for his many contributions to the AHFMR and to the health system in Alberta. The prize is awarded to an outstanding researcher whose work is deemed to have had a major impact on the understanding, prevention, recognition or treatment of cardiovascular disease and/or the understanding and promotion of cardiovascular health. 

ELIGIBILITY


The candidates should be:

  • "game-changers" in cardiovascular health research;
  • align with the vision of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and
  • be open to ongoing collaborations to help advance the Institutes mission;


Basic, clinical and health services and systems researchers are eligible.

The Libin Cardiovascular Institute (LCI) is pleased to invite you to participate in the Michael and Terry Wilson Cardiovascular Research Innovation Fund. To learn more about this fund and to participate, please acknowledge the Terms of Reference provided below.  

Purpose of funding:
To support multi-investigator teams proposing collaborative, innovative, translational projects in the areas of cardiovascular health and disease and/or projects focused on emerging priority areas within the Libin Cardiovascular Institute.

The primary purpose of this funding opportunity is to facilitate the creation of new collaborative teams that will develop new research projects. It is expected that this funding will enable these teams to subsequently apply for new external operating grants.

Eligibility:
Applications must include a Full Member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute as a primary applicant. Other team members may be from the Libin Cardiovascular Institute or from other areas as necessary for the success of the proposed project.

For this application, you will require the following details to submit:

OVERVIEW

The Libin Cardiovascular Institute's (LCI) Research Equipment Competition is to enhance existing or proposed research activities and external funding prospects, and to advance the Libin's research programs by supporting the purchase of necessary equipment. Priority will be given to applications that constitute a shared resource and align with the LCI's strategic research priorities. For example, an application for a shared resource would involve a principal applicant with multiple co-applicants and ultimately be used by multiple stakeholders.

  • Requests less than $5,000 will be managed by the Libin Institute’s Research Office, in consultation with the Libin Institute’s Research Director and Research Committee.
  • Requests $5,000 or greater will require at least 25 per cent matching funds committed by the principal investigator(s) at the time of application. These requests require approval by the LCI's Research Director and Research Committee.

The maximum amount per request will be limited to $25,000, however, under special circumstances, greater amounts may be considered. It is also required that at least 25 per cent of matching funds be committed at the time of application.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible expenses include:

  • Research equipment including shipping/delivery and/or custom/brokerage charges
  • Training for equipment
  • Software and licenses required to operate new equipment

Ineligible expenses include:

  • Service contracts
  • Insurance
  • Operating costs
  • Consumables
  • Office furniture
  • Office computers and peripherals
  • Construction/renovation
  • Equipment that is not located within the LCI organization

LCI Research Equipment Maintenance Support is intended to allow researchers to continue their existing or proposed research activities and externally funded prospects, and to advance the LCI's research programs by supporting the maintenance of necessary equipment.

Although requests from individual LCI investigators will be entertained, priority will be given to requests that constitute a shared resource and align with the LCI strategic research priorities. For example, a request for maintenance support for a shared resource would involve a principal investigator (PI), and multiple stakeholders.

Requests for maintenance and/or repair(s) will be managed as follows:

  • Maintenance and/or repair(s) less than $5,000 will be managed by the Libin Institute’s Research Office, in consultation with the Libin Institute’s Research Director and Research Committee.
  • Maintenance and/or repair(s) $5,000 or greater will require at least 25% matching funds committed by the PI(s) at the time of application. These requests will require approval by the Libin Institute’s Research Director and Research Committee.

Please note that core infrastructure (e.g., cold rooms, ice machines, fume hoods, etc.) that require maintenance and/or repair(s) should be reported to the LCI Office (libin@ucalgary.ca) separately.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible expenses include:

  • Emergency repairs
  • Preventative maintenance
  • Software or hardware upgrades (if it is integral to equipment operation)

Ineligible expenses include:

  • Multi-year service contracts
  • New research equipment
  • Basic equipment (e.g., pipettes, pH meters, water filtration, computer upgrades)
  • Operating costs
  • Office and laboratory furniture
  • Office and laboratory computers and peripherals when not used for equipment operation.
  • Construction/renovation

The Cumming School of Medicine has developed a Terms of Reference for Research Equipment Repair Funding requests, intended to help PIs by providing guidelines and an adjudication process for emergency equipment funding applications.

The OADR will provide up to $5,000 / year for Principal Investigators (PI) or lab members to obtain training in new techniques and methodologies that will enhance their research endeavors. The aim is to keep our range of technical expertise at a world class level to increase the impact of published work and future grant applications. Proposals will be considered to support acquisition of technical or methodological advances to improve an identified future grant application or to rapidly respond to acquiring research data requested by reviewers of manuscripts currently under review for potential publication in a high impact journal (Impact Factor ≥ 8 or specific research field leading journal).

The Libin Cardiovascular Institute is pleased to announce a call for applications for the LCI Women’s Cardiovascular Health Catalyst Grant. This is a new catalyst funding opportunity intended to support preliminary data generation or new collaborative research projects led by Libin members in priority research areas across women’s cardiovascular health. More details can be found in the Terms of Reference and Application forms. The deadline to submit your application is December 15th, 2023.
