Libin Precision Medicine 2025 Ignite Catalyst Competition – Now Open!
The Libin Precision Medicine Initiative (LPMI) team is pleased to announce a call for submissions for the LPMI Ignite Catalyst Competition. This competition aims to support investigators to utilize and demonstrate the value of LPMI-generated data resources, and specifically its Core Data Model to benefit innovative cardiac research and transform cardiovascular care. Funding will be provided to successful applicants or teams to support their work with LPMI experts collaborating closely with awardees to develop and validate targeted data-driven insights or products.
The Ignite Catalyst Competition is based on the completion of Version 1.0 of the LPMI Cardiac Data Model; a curated schema comprising over 850 standardized variable definitions prioritized from core areas of cardiovascular care. This foundational data model has now been generated for over 1 million patients of Southern Alberta who have received cardiac diagnostic services since the year 2000 and will be made accessible to Libin investigators in accordance to Research Ethics Board and Health Systems Access project approvals, and in accordance with the LPMI Terms of Use agreement. Data will be made accessible as de-identified, longitudinally matched data products for target populations as defined by REB approvals. Data categories include patient demographics, cardiac disease states, non-cardiac comorbidities, laboratory test results, non-invasive imaging (echocardiography, cardiac MRI), cardiac catheterization, ECG and Holter, pharmacy data, and clinical outcomes.
Deadline for Submission: Friday, July 4, 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, your research project requires its own REB approval. The LPMI team has developed a data resource that can be used by researchers, however the regulatory pathways for each institution must still be in place. The ethics board provides compliance and ethical oversight and AHS remains the data custodian. LPMI can provide guidance for developing the submissions to these institutions upon consultation, or provide guidance on submitting modifications for projects that may fit the Core Data Model criteria but already have REB and HSA approval. LPMI will only release data once all institutional requirements are in place.
Yes, you can apply for the Ignite Catalyst Competition prior to receiving approvals. The team will work with successful applicants after Notice of Award to support appropriate institutional documentation. Note that LPMI will not release data until all necessary approvals and documentation are in place.
One of the biggest challenges with research that involves electronic medical records and various types of clinical data is knowing what data is needed and how to use the correct data for a project. LPMI is here to bridge the gap and translate the types of data you are asking for in your project proposal to the necessary data to meet the project objectives. To be sure the types of data you will need are available, please refer to the Core Data Model Inventory or sign up for a mini-consultation. The purpose of the mini-consultation is general feasibility to ensure your application can be completed with data from the Core Data Model. If the project is successful in the Ignite Competition, full consultation will begin after Notice of Award.
No. All data available in the LPMI Core Data Model are pseudonymized. This means that all data from a single patient are linked together using an identification code (a pseudonym) instead of their name or AHN. This guarantees patient anonymity.
Yes, as Libin members, Ignite Competition applicants may wish to use the expertise of the Mozell Family Analysis Core to help with developing an analysis plan and executing the analysis. These services are currently offered free of charge to Libin members and can be incorporated with an Ignite Catalyst Competition application or added to the project plan after NOA through consultations during the timeline of the award.
