Department of Cardiac Sciences

The Department of Cardiac Sciences is within the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. It includes cardiologists, internal medicine specialists, researchers and cardiac surgeons.

Cardiac Sciences Sections

There are two sections within the Department of Cardiac Sciences and two affiliated sections. 

Cardiology

There are about 75 cardiologists in the Section of Cardiology that cover the four adult-care hospitals within Alberta Health Services' Calgary Zone. In addition, there are a number of clinics situated around the city of Calgary that serve the community, providing general cardiology and specialty services.

Cardiac Surgery

There are 10 surgeons within the Section of Cardiac Surgery who perform about 1,500 procedures each year, ranging from complex valve replacements to coronary artery bypasses. The education program within this division attracts the best and brightest from across Canada and is known for its hands-on approach.

Cardiac Anesthesiology

Cardiac anesthesiologists hold joint appointments in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Cardiac Sciences, and work closely with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac intensivists, cardiac nurses and perfusionists.

Cardiac ICU

The Department of Critical Care includes four adult intensive care units located in three tertiary level hospitals. It operates 63 beds, 12 of which are dedicated to post-operative cardiac surgical care.

Academic Medicine and Health Services Program

The Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP) ensures physicians affiliated with Alberta’s faculties of medicine are compensated for providing patient care along with their work related to research, innovation, education, administration and leadership.

Who can apply? Cardiology, cardiology sub-specialty fellows and cardiac surgery residents

The L.B. Mitchell Clinical Research Prize recognizes the significant contributions of Dr. L.B. Mitchell to cardiovascular health in Calgary. In addition to his research career in clinical cardiac electrophysiology, Dr. Mitchell served as a leader and mentor to colleagues and students and a dedicated provider of care to his patients. The purpose of this annual prize is to support trainees in cardiovascular programs at the University of Calgary.

Who can apply? Clinical Fellows

Dr. Peter F. Russell was the first graduate of the Clinical Cardiology Training Program at the University of Calgary in 1983. This award was established by his colleagues and family to honour his life and the exceptional care and compassion he provided for his patients. It is awarded annually to a clinical fellow who is considered to best exemplify Dr. Russell's passion for medicine and patients.

Who can apply? Clinical fellows

The Arthur J.E. Child Fellowship is supported by a generous gift from the Arthur J.E. Child Foundation. It is awarded to outstanding physicians who wish to pursue advanced training in cardiovascular medicine. The awards support local candidates who plan to undertake Fellowships at high-level international centers and to train locally at the University of Calgary.

Application form

Who can apply? Residents in their final year of training (up to and including R5) may apply. Applicants must successfully complete their current training program prior to commencement of advanced fellowship training.

The Helios – UCMG Awards provides bridging salary support for clinical fellowship trainees who successfully complete postgraduate medical training and are enrolled in further advanced clinical or scholarly training at another institution to enhance their skills.

This award is managed by the Senior Associate Dean, Education, Cumming School of Medicine office. Information about this award is distributed through department heads in late November/early December with results coming out at the end of January/beginning of February.

Who can apply? Teams of cardiologists and cardiology fellows

This annual competition funds collaborative research projects jointly led by at least one staff cardiologist and at least one core cardiology fellow in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Calgary.
