Libin Wears Red Step Challenge
Step up for women’s heart health — together, we can make every heartbeat count!
Join the Libin Wears Red Step Challenge!
From Feb. 1–28, 2026, all Libin-affiliated research groups and labs are invited to take part in a friendly step challenge. The team with the highest average steps per person will earn bragging rights—and a special team treat!
How the challenge works:
All steps count toward your team’s total, and results will be normalized per capita (total steps ÷ number of team members) to keep competition fair, no matter your team size.
Registration
- Each research laboratory or team will participate as one group.
- Choose one team representative to complete the online registration form.
- Click the button below to register. Please only complete one form per team.
Tracking Your Steps
You may track your steps using ONE of the following methods:
A. StepUp App
StepUp is a free, social step-tracking app that supports team challenges.
- View information about the app here: https://thestepupapp.com/. You can download it for free from the app store.
- Join your team’s group (team leader will download the app and set the group up by sending invites to team members). The app syncs to other pedometer apps and devices, such as Pacer and smart watches.
- The app will automatically track your steps and allow you to follow team progress.
- Team leader will submit your total cumulative steps, along with the number of team participants to libin@ucalgary.ca by end of day March 3.
B. Manual Tracking
If you prefer not to use the app:
- Use any pedometer to record your daily steps. Submit them to your team leader.
- Your team leader will record your steps using our manual tracker.
- Team leader will submit your total cumulative steps, along with the number of team participants to libin@ucalgary.ca by end of day March 3.
Incentives & Awards

- The team with the highest average steps per person wins the Step Challenge Trophy and a sweet treat delivered to the lab.
Recognition:
- Winners and top performers will also be highlighted in the Libin newsletter and on social media.

About Libin Wears Red
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of premature death in Canada, taking a life every 16 minutes. Yet women are under-studied, underdiagnosed, under-treated and under-aware when it comes to their heart and vascular health.
The good news is cardiovascular disease is largely preventable. Wear Red Canada is celebrated annually on Feb. 13 to raise awareness and empower women to take charge of their cardiovascular health.
The Libin Cardiovascular Institute urges you to wear red on Feb. 13 to further awareness and discussion about women's heart health.
