Strong Killam Prize showing for Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Arts made a strong showing at last week’s Killam Celebration as the distinguished Killam Prizes were handed out to a number of faculty members.
Among the winners were Dr. Keith Yeates, PhD, head of the Department of Psychology, who received a Killam Annual Professor Award, and Dr. Lucija Meuhlenbachs, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Economics, who won a Killam Emerging Research Leader Award (SSHRC category).
Yeates is recognized as one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). Muehlenbachs is emerging as a national and international leader in the fields of environmental and resource economics.
A Killam Postdoctoral Laureate went to Dr. Ashley Ware, PhD, who is working with Yeates in the Integrated Concussion Research Program.
Another award went to Dr. Heidi Stark, PhD, who is the 2019-2020 Killam Visiting Scholar, coming to our Department of Political Science from the University of Victoria. Stark’s research is focused in the field of Indigenous comparative politics, native diplomacy and treaty and aboriginal rights.
Also celebrated were the 2019 Killam Pre-doctoral Laureates from Arts (first year), Celso Antonio Alves Neto in Philosophy and Joshua Whitehead in English. Neto specializes in the philosophies of science, biology and biological lineage. Whitehead’s focus is indigenous literature. He published his debut poetry collection Full-Metal Indigiqueer in 2017 and his debut novel Johnny Appleseed in 2018.
A 2018 second year Killam Pre-Doctoral Laureate recipient was also honored, Samantha Jones in geography, who researches carbon cycling, chemical oceanography and biochemical processes in the Canadian Arctic.
