Reminder: Water restrictions start today

Message to campus community
Calgary water main break
The Bearspaw South Feeder Main (BSFM) will be shut down on Monday, March 9, to allow for planned reinforcement repairs. The City of Calgary via Instagram

Effective today, the City of Calgary has introduced mandatory water restrictions. This planned return to city-wide water conservation measures is the result of reinforcement work on the Bearspaw south feeder main, and is expected to continue for about four weeks.

No outdoor water use will be permitted and all Calgarians are asked to take action to reduce indoor water use, including:

  • Limit showers to three minutes
  • Skip flushes when you can
  • Only run full loads of dishes and laundry

Water restrictions at UCalgary

The University of Calgary is actively taking steps to reduce the amount of water we draw from city infrastructure and we encourage everyone on campus to do their part. Small actions across our community make a meaningful difference.

Campus facilities are open.

  • The Aquatic Centre pool continues to operate and will only be refilled as needed.
  • Showers in the Dr. Roger Jackson Kinesiology Complex are available, and users are encouraged to keep showers under three minutes.
  • Students living in residence are asked to limit water use when showering, doing laundry and washing dishes.

Operational and research teams are modifying their practices.

  • Caretaking teams have adjusted cleaning methods and schedules to reduce water consumption, and research teams will decrease water use where possible.

If you notice water leaks, please report it immediately through Facilities or by calling 403.220.7555.

UCalgary’s hybrid work program remains unchanged. Employees are expected to attend their regular in-person workdays. Classes continue as scheduled.
