Become a Libin Cardiovascular Institute Member

There are five types of memberships in the Libin Cardiovascular Institute with different expectations and benefits. Learn how you can become a member below.

Principal Member

A current academic or clinical appointment at University of Calgary - includes professorial ranks (assistant, associate, or full professor), instructional ranks (instructor lecturer, senior instructor), clinical appointments.

  • A focus on cardiovascular research and/or education with a primary interest or commitment in the Libin Cardiovascular Institute.

Benefits:

  • Opportunities for collaboration with Libin membership, including the option to join a Clinical Group
  • Eligible for all Libin Cardiovascular Institute support programs and resources, including:
    • Graduate studentships and postdoctoral and clinical fellowships
    • Support and funding for use of all LCI-run Platforms, including the Mozell Core Analysis Lab, Core Pathology Lab, Centre for Health Informatics, Cardiovascular Physiology Core
    • Test Your Concept Program, Internal Peer Review and Mentorship
    • LCI Research Support Funding, Equipment & Maintenance Competition, and other LCI funding programs
  • Receive priority for space within the LCI footprint (in alignment with strategic priorities and CSM Space Policy)
  • Invitations to all LCI events for the PI plus all of their trainees and staff

Responsibilities:

  • Aligned with one or more LCI pillars (Libin Precision Medicine Initiative, Women’s Cardiovascular Health Initiative, Clinical Innovation Initiative, Person to Population Initiative), LCI research priorities, and/or LCI education programs
  • Evidence of ongoing scholarly contributions to the field of cardiovascular health
  • Acknowledgement of LCI affiliation on all publications, presentations and posters by PIs and trainees
  • Commitment to actively contribute to the LCI’s success via involvement in one or more:
    • Internal review of member grants (expected participation of Associate and Full Professors)
    • Mentorship for fellow members (expected participation as mentors by Associate and Full Professors)
    • Service on committees and/or leadership roles
    • Assistance with research, education and community events
    • Provide teaching/mentoring opportunities for our trainee members
    • Participation in other activities as requested
  • Attendance at all major annual LCI research and education events, including the Tine Haworth Cardiovascular Research Day, Libin/Alberta Heritage Foundation Medical Prize in Cardiovascular Research Lectureship (AHFMR), town halls, plus regular attendance at other seminars and symposia.

Complete the LCI Membership Application Form, and submit it to libin@ucalgary.ca along with the required supporting documents, as indicated in the form.

All membership applications are initially reviewed for eligibility by LCI operations staff. Applications from those with academic and/or clinical appointments are then sent to the LCI Director and leadership team for review. 

 

Affiliate Member

Academic appointment at a post-secondary institution or equivalent; including adjunct and research appointments.

  • If the applicant is external to the University of Calgary, they must be sponsored by a Full LCI member
  • An interest in cardiovascular research and/or education, but with a primary interest or commitment outside of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute

Benefits:

  • Opportunities for collaboration with the LCI membership
  • Invitations to all LCI events for the PI plus all of their trainees and research staff
  • Please note that Affiliate Members are not eligible for LCI research funding, direct support, or core resources, and typically are not allocated space within the LCI footprint

Responsibilities:

  • Ongoing contributions to LCI pillars, research priorities, and/or education activities
    • Contributions may include participation in collaborative research projects, membership on graduate student review committees, internal review of grant applications and other similar activities

Trainee/Student Member

One of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute's mandates is to train the next generation of cardiovascular clinicians and researchers. Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, and residents join us from around the world to study and train with our world-class members. 

  • Clinical or research trainees who are under the supervision of a principal Libin member

Benefits:

  • Access to Graduate studentships and postdoctoral and clinical fellowships
  • Regular communications and updates about the activities of the LCI via our newsletter
  • Membership in the Libin Cardiovascular Institute Trainee Organization (LCITO)
  • Invitations to all LCI public events and some member events on the Foothills Campus
  • Access to shared space within the LCI footprint, subject to availability
  • Please note that trainee/student members are not eligible for LCI research funding, direct support or core resources

Responsibilities:

  • Participation in monthly RUSS and Journal Club sessions during the academic year
  • Responsible care and maintenance of shared trainee/student spaces
  • Being an advocate for cardiovascular health within your own community

Community Member – Allied Health

The Libin Cardiovascular Institute is working to advance the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular conditions to improve outcomes for all, but we don’t do it alone.

  • Individuals working within the provincial health care system who support cardiovascular care and health through their position. This includes but is not limited to research associates, lab staff, nurses, technicians, therapists, social workers, pharmacists, and administrative support staff.

  • Regular communications and updates about the activities of the LCI via our newsletter
  • Invitations to all LCI public events and some member events on the Foothills Campus
  • Please note that community members are not eligible for LCI research funding, direct support or core resources, and are not allocated space within the LCI footprint

Responsibilities:

  • Involvement in cardiovascular patient care and health promotion
  • Being an advocate for cardiovascular health within your own community

Community Member - Public

Community involvement is key at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute. It fosters local pride and support while helping us tailor our programs to community needs. Involvement also raises awareness about heart health and promotes healthy living. By engaging with us, you can help shape our initiatives, learn about heart health, and join us in creating a healthier community.

  • Individuals with interest or content expertise (including lived experience) in cardiovascular health

Responsibilities:

  • Being an advocate for cardiovascular health within your own community
