P2 Cardiovascular Research Retreat

Join us for the opportunity to network, exchange ideas, explore collaborations and get feedback and potential seed funding for research projects at our Spring 2025 retreat.

Person to Population (P2) Cardiovascular Research Initiative members and affiliated trainees are invited to join us for a spring retreat on Friday, June 13. This interactive retreat will provide opportunities for networking and collaboration. 

The event will also feature presentations from P2 members selected as finalists in the Seed-grant Funding Competition and a trainee poster competition.

P2 Test Your Concept – Seed Grant Funding Competition

P2 faculty members are invited to submit project proposals for up to $10,000 in seed funding to develop projects that address cardiovascular health inequities with potential to secure external research funding. To apply, submit a brief project overview and budget here or send your project idea to Judy Siu at dsiu@ucalgary.ca. Deadline: June 1. 

Details

  • Up to three finalists will be selected to present their proposals at the retreat
  • Applicants will deliver a 15-minute presentation, outlining project aims, hypotheses, methodology and approach, followed by a 10-minute Q&A
  • Proposals will be evaluated by an adjudication committee, with top ranked project(s) being awarded

Strategic Planning Session (Open to faculty members only) 

Following the retreat, we invite all faculty members to stay and join us for a Strategic Planning Session from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. This dedicated session will help shape future priorities and directions of the P2 Initiative. We look forward to your valuable input. Please RSVP for this session when you register for the P2 Retreat. 

Poster Competition

P2 trainees are encouraged to take part in a trainee poster competition. Winners will receive operational funds to assist with their research and/or knowledge translation efforts. Faculty will vote on posters looking at scientific rigour (background, methods and impact). The following prizes will be awarded: 

  • First Place - $2,000 
  • Second Place - $1,000 
  • General Appeal (voted on by all attendees) - $1,000

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Kathryn King-Shier, RN, PhD

Professor, Faculty of Nursing and Department of Community Health Sciences, University of Calgary

We are honoured to welcome Dr. Kathryn King-Shier, one of Canada's leading cardiovascular nurse scientists, as the keynote speaker for this year’s Person to Population (P2) Cardiovascular Research Retreat. Dr. King-Shier is internationally recognized for her multi-methods research program exploring how ethnicity and sex/gender influence cardiovascular disease symptoms, access to care and prevention.

About Dr. King-Sheir

After earning her BScN from McMaster University, Dr. King-Shier completed her Master’s and PhD in Nursing at the University of Alberta, followed by post-doctoral training in Cardiology at the EPICORE Centre. She joined the University of Calgary in 1999. Her work has since been supported by Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Heart & Stroke and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. 

Dr. King-Shier has served on CIHR’s Institute Advisory Board for Circulatory and Respiratory Health and several peer-review committees. She is a member of the editorial board for the Canadian Journal of Cardiology and a former member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing.
