UCalgary home to some of Canada’s 150 Nurses
To mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation, the Canadian Nurses Association invited nominations of nurse innovators and champions in health care from across the country. Of the 25 Alberta nurses recognized, several are Faculty of Nursing members: Professor and Kids Cancer Care Foundation Chair in Child and Family Cancer Care Nancy Moules, associate professors Sandi Hirst, Shahirose Premji and Sandra Reilly and nursing instructor Judy Hanson.
Both Hanson and Moules are alumni but several other UCalgary alumni are also present among the 150 including:
- Jean Harrowing (MN’98)
- Arlene Kent-Wilkinson (MN’93)
- Berna Moss (BN’92)
- Marlene Smadu (LLD’13)
- Roaslie Starzomski (MN’84)
Criteria for the awards included demonstrated leadership in connecting with patients and their families using advanced patient-centered approaches; strong public advocacy in support of social justice and quality health care; advanced professional expertise and interprofessional practice; and significant contributions to professional organizations while inspiring and supporting the development of others by serving as a mentor or advisor.
