Bio: 

Dr. Appoo completed his B.Sc. in Biochemistry in 1993 from McGill University, Montreal Que., and his Doctorate of Medicine (MDCM) in 1997, from McGill University. This was followed by Cardiac Surgery training at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and in 2003 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). Following his certification in Cardiac Surgery, he pursued a fellowship in Advanced Adult Cardiac Surgery at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, England (2003-2004). After a year in Europe, he did a second fellowship, at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa. While at UPENN (2004-2005), he acquired specialized training in Thoracic Aortic Surgery, Endovascular Aortic Stent Grafting and Heart Failure Surgery. Since joining the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, Dr. Appoo has established new clinical programs in the areas of thoracic aortic surgery and mechanical cardiac support. In 2006, he implanted the first left ventricular assist device in Southern Alberta.

Research Interests:

Chronic and Acute thoracic aortic pathology, including:

  • aneurysmal disease
  • aortic coarctation
  • aortic dissection
  • traumatic aortic injury
  • bicuspid aortic valve syndrome
  • aortic pathology with Marfan’s disease

He also has a special interest in Thoracic EndoVascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) – a “minimally invasive” approach to treat complex aortic pathology. A list of Dr. Appoo’s publications.
