The Dr. E.R. Smith Lectureship in Cardiovascular Research
The Dr. E. R. Smith Lectureship in Cardiovascular Research was established to honour Dr. Smith for his dedicated leadership and service as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1992 - 1997. The purpose of the lectureship is to further scientific knowledge and training of students in the area of cardiovascular disease.
Each year, one distinguished scientist/scholar will spend two to three days visiting the Faculty of Medicine. During that time, he or she will present a state-of-the-art lecture to the members of the Faculty and if appropriate, present a lecture of more general interest to the University of Calgary community on a topic of broader scope. Opportunities for informal scientific exchanges between the scientist/scholar and faculty, postdocutural fellows, graduate and undergraduate medical students will be emphasized during the visit.

The Libin / Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) Prize for Excellence in Cardiovascular Research
This prize is awarded to an outstanding international researcher whose work is deemed to have had a major impact on the understanding, prevention, recognition or treatment of cardiovascular disease and/or the understanding and promotion of Cardiovascular health. Basic, clinical or health researchers are eligible.

This prize was established in honor of Dr. Alvin Libin for his many contributions to the AHFMR including service as board chair. The award is also meant recognize Dr. Libin’s contribution to the health system in Alberta, and to recognize his particular interest in the cardiovascular sciences.
Subsequent to the establishment of this prize, the Alvin and Mona Libin Foundation, of which, Dr. Libin is principle patron, founded the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta in partnership with the Calgary Health Region and the University of Calgary.
Awards for Trainees
Dr. L.B. Mitchell Clinical Research Prize
The L.B. Mitchell Clinical Research Prize was created in recognition of the significant contributions of Dr. L.B. Mitchell to cardiovascular health in Calgary. In addition to his research career in clinical cardiac electrophyisiology, Dr. Mitchell served as a leader and mentor to colleagues and students and a dedicated provider of care to his patients.
The purpose of this annual prize is to support trainees in cardiovascular programs at the University of Calgary. This award is open to cardiology and cardiology sub-specialty fellows and cardiac surgery residents.

The Peter F. Russell MD FRCP (C) Clinical Cardiology Fellowship Award
The award is presented annually to the clinical fellow who is considered by best exemplify Dr. Russell's passion for medicine and patients.
This award was established by the colleagues and family of Dr. Peter F. Russell to honor his life and the exceptional care and compassion he provided for his patients. Dr. Russell was the first graduate of the Clinical Cardiology Training Program at the University of Calgary in 1983.

Kertland Doctoral Scholarships
David S. (Kim) Kertland has been a significant supporter of the scientific community at the University of Calgary. Through his contributions, Mr. Kertland has fostered the development of vascular biology within the Faculty of Medicine. This scholarship reflects his commitment to the next generation of scientists involved in basic vascular biology research.
The Smooth Muscle Research Group (SMRG) offers trainees opportunities to do both graduate work and postdoctoral training. SMRG is a multi-disciplinary research group, with extensive interaction between laboratories and investigators.

The Arthur J.E. Child Fellowship
The Arthur J.E. Child Fellowship honours the memory of an innovative businessman and a great philanthropist. It is supported by a generous gift from the Arthur J.E. Child Foundation. It is awarded on an annual basis to outstanding physicians who wish to pursue advanced training in cardiovascular medicine. The awards support local candidates who plan to undertake Fellowships at high-level international centres, and to train locally at the University of Calgary. Tine Haworth Scholarships in Cardiovascular Research
The Education Council of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute has allocated funds to support two scholarships ($11,000 each) for a period of one year. Funds will be directed to PhD students in the first two years of their program. These awards are designed to enhance competitiveness for longer-term external funding.
